MASSACHUSETTS DELEGATION IN THE EASTERN CAPE

A 17 member strong delegation from the US States of Massachusetts arrives this weekend to strengthen partnership and cooperation between
the Health Department of the Province of the Eastern Cape and Massachusetts. The delegation will be welcomed by MEC for Health Dr Bevan
Goqwana on Sunday, 16 July 2000 at Emzini Restaurant Berlin at 13:00.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Province of the Eastern Cape signed a Sister State Province Agreement in 1997, undertaking to
cooperate in the areas of trade, investment, culture, environment, education and technology exchange and tourism. Building upon the spirit
of the agreement, Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health Dr Howard Koh, initiated linkage between the Departments of Health of the two
provinces in 1998.

It is under the auspices of the Sister State Province Agreement that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health established a permanent
Massachusetts South Africa Task Force on April 26, 2000. The Task Force was established to identify strategic preventative and
therapeutic health-related opportunities for partnership development between Massachusetts and South Africa in areas of mutual interest
including technology, service delivery, economic development and research. These efforts will seek to build upon already significant
exchange programmes between Massachusetts and the Eastern Cape.

Areas of focus for the Task Force will be driven by epidemiological ( Disease profile and health infrastructure concern identified by
Province of the Eastern Cape representatives and will selectively reflect those areas in which Massachusetts capability and interest have
been identified.

institution is invited to cover the event and attend a Press Conference to be held at State House in Bisho on Monday, 17 July 2000 at
